Client

National Statistical and Financial Body (Australia)

Executive Summary

This globally recognised financial institution is committed to promoting and maintaining a high standard of professional practice. It represents 5,000+ members who work globally across a wide variety of roles in the insurance, finance, and consulting sectors. The body supports its members with on-going training and professional development. They are committed to using online learning and assessments, and recognise the advantages that digitisation provides in terms of adaptability, efficiency, and environmental responsibility.

Twice yearly their training cohorts of over 750 candidates, take online assessments in their selected fields of study, such as general insurance, life insurance, and superannuation. The assessments vary in length of time from around three hours and to up to nine hours for case study assignments.

Due to the need for remote learning brought about by the pandemic, the institution needed a way to conduct fair and high integrity assessments from home or work locations anywhere in the world.

The organisation sought to on-board an assessment solution partner capable of facilitating a remote proctoring solution across the Asia-Pacific region to monitor candidates during these high stakes assessments. The solution was required to support candidates sitting their exams using their personal
computers and needed to guarantee the online proctoring service provided fairness to all candidates across the AsiaPacific region. After careful consideration, Elumina’s Assess App SaaS platform was chosen as the preferred online proctoring and invigilation option. Elumina continues to
effectively partner and support the administration of these assessments today.

Introduction

The essential requirements required a comprehensive online proctoring and invigilation service that would ensure equity and fairness for all candidates. The goal was to minimise the risk of potential cheating using features such as:

In built integration capacity with the Learning Management System (Canvas) for managing assignments and candidates.

Provide biometric or facial recognition upon login to ensure the right person was sitting the assessments.

Ability to record camera, sound, and screen captures to ensure all candidate behaviour was traceable.

Leverage AI to detect cheating and other scenarios,
thereby reducing overhead and administration costs.

Have minimal impact on candidates’ personal computers without the need for software installations or privacy concerns.

Run reliably in China and across the wider AsiaPacific region.

Elumina’s iProctor service satisfied all of the requirements and was able to help the institution meet their needs by providing a secure and monitored testing environment, deterring cheating. The solution ensures that the assessments are taken in compliance with regulatory or accreditation guidelines.

Elumina's Assess App

The Business

The client aimed to guarantee equal access and maintain a high level of integrity in the assessment process for their global Asia-Pacific cohorts. Each candidate was required to possess a contemporary PC equipped with Google Chrome and a dependable internet connection of up to 250Kbs as the minimum requirement.

The Challenge

The primary concern was reliability and scalability of the solution as it needs to operate across such a wide geographic area and with candidates being on the end of a variety of home, work or other internet connections. A significant part of the cohort was in China, which requires the solution to work through their national firewalls and other security measures.

Finding a Solution

Elumina’s Assess App iProctor module has been designed for scalability, with this challenge in mind it has a low footprint on the candidates’ PCs, and safe guards to run successful assessments and avoiding technical issues during assessments, unlike some North American or European providers. The platform has undergone independent evaluations and reviews to ensure a smooth and seamless experience, even in internet-challenged environments among candidates who are widely geographically dispersed.

Implementation and results

Across a multi-year program, all candidates have been able to successfully complete their proctored assessments from their home, work or other locations.
The candidates have expressed positive feedback regarding the proctoring service, noting how user-friendly it is. After just a few minutes, they were able to forget that they were being proctored online and remained focused
on their assessments.
